1995 - 2005 CRIME RANKINGS Every year the FBI tracks the number of crimes in nine major categories for U.S. cities with a population of 10,000 or more.  The categories are TOTAL CRIME, MURDER, FORCIBLE RAPE, ROBBERY, AGGRAVATED ASSAULT, BURGLARY, LARCENY/THEFT, MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT and ARSON.  This information is available on the FBI website www.fbi.gov. To be able to compare the severity of crime among cities with different populations, it is necessary to calculate the number of crimes in a given category "per capita" or "per person".  This provides a comparison among cities on the odds of a citizen becoming a victim of a specific crime. The following nine tables provide ranking of cities by crimes per capita in each crime category for the largest cities in the United States with more than one million population from 1995 thru 2005.  A ranking of #1 would be the highest per capita crime rate, while #9 would be the lowest per capita crime rate. Unfortunately....every year....for the last NINE years....Dallas has ranked #1, #2 or #3 in all FBI crime categories with four exceptions....when it was ranked #4 in the category of aggravated assault in 2000 & again in 2004, when it ranked #4 in robbery in 1997 and when it ranked #4 in the category of murder in 2002.  Dallas is the only city that  has consistently ranked in the top positions in all of the crime categories every year from 1995 through 2005.  Every year  the other cities may rank high in some categories, but they rank low in other categories.  Every year, Dallas ranks high comparison.  Per capita crime rates were calculated using data obtained from the FBI Uniform Crime Report (UCR) which can be viewed on www.fbi.gov.  These per capita crime rates were then used to rank each city.  A  city with a #1 ranking would have the highest crime rate per capita, while a city with a #9 ranking would have the lowest. **2005 crime rates are not based on official FBI UCR stats, but rather they  are calculated by extrapolating 2005 monthly statistics available as of 03/05/06 from police departments in each city ranked.  Rankings are preliminary and will be updated if and when new information is made available.  Preliminary UCR results from the FBI are not published until June 2006.  Data compiled and calculated by dallascrime.com.  NOTE:  Dallas is the only city that
