COMPARING DALLAS & NEW YORK CITY IN CRIME
Nine cities in America have a population over one million people.  According to the 2004 Census figures, New York City is the largest with slightly more than eight (8) million and Dallas is the smallest with slightly more than one (1) million.  Ranking the nine cities by population, New York City is #1 and Dallas is #9.

When it comes to crime, Dallas is ranked #1 with around 8624 crimes per 100,000 people.  New York City is ranked # 9 with around 1642 crimes per 100,000 people.  These are preliminary figures for 2005 based on crimes stats provided by the respective police departments.

Putting these statistics in perspective, a person who lives in Dallas is over five times more likely to be a victim of crime than a person who lives in New York City.  Analyzing other crimes per capita categories, a Dallas citizen is more than twice as likely to be murdered and more than six times more likely to be burglarized than a citizen of New York City.

The Dallas Police Department has reported a 5.3% decrease in crime in 2005, compared with 2004.  Unfortunately for Dallas, the average decrease in crime among the other eight cities, with population over one million, averaged 7.5%.  Relative to the other cities, Dallas  maintains its 2004 ranking in five crime categories while moving up from #4 to #2 in aggravated assault and down from #2 to #3 in murder.  Had it not been for the influx of Katrina refugees into Houston, Dallas would have easily repeated its #2 ranking in murder.  Arson stats have yet to be reported, but quite probably Dallas will continue #1 in that category as it has been for over eight years in a row.

COMPARED TO OTHER CITIES WITH POPULATION OVER ONE MILLION, CRIME IN DALLAS IS GETTING WORSE, NOT BETTER.
