LETTER TO THE EDITOR

AN EDITED VERSION OF THE LETTER BELOW WAS PUBLISHED ON JUNE 14, 2003 BY THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS IN THEIR "LETTERS TO THE EDITOR" SECTION ON THEIR EDITORIAL PAGE.  AN ACCOMPANYING CHART WAS INCLUDED WITH THE LETTER THAT LISTED THE TOTAL CRIME RATES PER CAPITA FOR THE TEN LARGEST CITIES WITH POPULATION OVER ONE MILLION FOR 2002.  THE CHART CLEARLY LISTED DALLAS AS #1 IN TOTAL CRIMES PER CAPITA.

PUBLISHING OF THE LETTER WAS FOLLOWED BY THE LEAD FRONT PAGE HEADLINE STORY IN THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS ON JULY 30 BY WILLIAM GRABELL AND THE FEATURED COVER STORY IN THE DALLAS OBSERVER BY JIM SCHUTZE THE WEEK OF JULY 27.  THESE TWO NEWS STORIES WERE IN TURN FOLLOWED BY BLANKET COVERAGE OF THE CRIME ISSUE IN DALLAS BY MOST OF THE BROADCAST AND PRINT MEDIA OUTLETS IN THE CITY.

I WANT TO THANK JIM FRISINGER AND THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS FOR PUBLISHING MY LETTER. THE PUBLISHING OF THAT LETTER SEEMS TO HAVE STIRRED UP QUITE A HORNET'S NEST.  AT LAST, THE CITIZENS OF DALLAS HAVE FINALLY BEEN ALERTED TO THE SERIOUS CRIME PROBLEM IN OUR CITY

NOW THAT WE KNOW WE HAVE A PROBLEM......THE NEXT STEP IS TO DEFINE THE SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEM.

SUBJECT:  CRIME PROBLEM IN DALLAS - 2002 FBI CRIME STATS

Gentlemen:

EVERY YEAR…..FOR THE LAST FIVE YEARS…..DALLAS CITIZENS HAVE BEEN CRIME VICTIMS AT THE HIGHEST RATE IN THE NATION AMONG CITIES WITH A POPULATION OF ONE MILLION OR MORE. ( www.dallascrime.com )

The preliminary 2002 FBI national crime stats were released early this week.  If you analyze those stats you will find that Dallas has the highest total crime rate per capita, highest burglary rate per capita, highest robbery rate per capita and the highest arson rate per capita of any city in the nation with population of one million or more.  It has been #1 in total crime and burglary for the last FIVE YEARS IN A ROW.

Dallas citizen would never know this by watching television, listening to the radio or by reading the print media.  Check out website www.dallascrime.com for details on this issue.
I have been in the security business in the DFW Metroplex for over ten years. After speaking with clients, friends and business associates, no one that I have spoken to has been aware that Dallas has a TOTAL CRIME RATE PER CAPITA rate THREE times higher than New York City.  In 2002, Dallas had 9346 crimes per 100,000 citizens while NYC had only 3140 crimes per 100,000 citizens (lowest in the nation).  The BURGLARY RATE PER CAPITA rate in Dallas is over FOUR times higher than New York City.  In 2002, Dallas had 1674 burglaries per 100,000 citizens while NYC had only 375 burglaries per 100,000 citizens (again, NYC is lowest in the nation).    I have also spoken with a number of city council members and they too, indicated that they were not aware that crime in Dallas was the highest in the nation.

Of the nine crime categories that are tracked each year by the FBI, Dallas, in 2002, placed #1 or #2 in SEVEN of the NINE categories among major cities with population over one million.  In 2001, Dallas placed #1 or #2 in EIGHT of the NINE categories.  Even though the overall crime rate decreased nationally last year…..it continues to increase in Dallas which already has the highest rates.

Why doesn’t the news media present these facts to our citizens.  You guys cover Mayor Miller’s crusade to ban smoking, but never cover the cities’ complete failure to provide the most basic of city services…..protecting citizens from crime.  WHERE ARE YOUR PRIORITIES?  As a public service and obligation to the citizens of our city, you need to give this issue the priority that it deserves.  Is the media in Dallas being censored by the establishment on this issue…..are you guys just smoking something……are you deaf, dumb and/or blind…..what’s the problem?  A citizen of Dallas is 230% more likely to be murdered than a citizen of New York City (16 murders per 100,000 in Dallas versus 7 murders per 100,000 in NYC).  If the media will get this issue into perspective…..present it to Dallas citizens……I’m sure that this would change priorities at City Hall.

A reduction in crime in Dallas, the order of magnitude accomplished by New York City in the past decade, would literally result in a renaissance for our city.   Benefits include, but are not limited to:  improved quality of life, increased property values, higher tax revenue, more corporate relocation to the city, lower insurance premiums, etc., etc., etc., ad infinitum.  These benefits would most certainly far outweigh the increased cost for crime prevention.

Look forward to your response.
