THE FOLLOWING IS AN E-MAIL SENT TO MY COUNCILMAN, MITCH RASANSKY ON 02/10/06
In our phone conversation last week, you told me that if wasn't for Laura Miller, the police would have never gotten their raise.
I guess you forgot Mayor Miller's opposition to the 2003 Police 17% Pay Raise Referendum. I'll admit that later she worked hard to get the 5-5-5 raises over three years, but it was too little to fix the disparity between Dallas Police salaries and what they get in the suburbs.
You told me that you thought Mayor Miller's heart was in the right place. To Hell with her heart.....what about her head? Three years after the Dallas Morning News published the headline "Dallas Crime Highest Per Capita In Nation".....we have fewer police than we had then and are still #1 in total crime per capita among the largest cities. For 2005, if preliminary figures are correct, Dallas will increase its margin separating it from other major cities in crime. Other major cities, over a million in population, reduced crime an average of 50% more than Dallas.
I realize the City Manager is over the Police Chief and not the Mayor. But if you believe either Mary Suhm or the Mayor is doing a good job on crime, then you are living on another planet. The efforts to date are pathetic. Just keep enforcing the smoking ban, building unnecessary bridges, nailing up "park, hide and lock" signs, allowing taxpayer money to be used to brainwash citizens with lies and distortions about VR and having the police not respond to commercial burglar alarms.
In fact, with the "wise" decisions that you guys have been making lately, it wouldn't surprise me if you guys didn't expand verified response from commercial burglaries to ALL crimes. Think of all the money the city would save. Why then we wouldn't need hardly any police at all. It is, of course, an absurd thought. But with the decisions the council has been making lately, it wouldn't surprise me one bit.
Don't you and other council members realize how damned ridiculous the city government looks thru the eyes of the citizens of Dallas? Sorry Mitch, but you all look like fools.
